Coaches

At Motherwell Athletics Club, we take great pride in our dedicated and growing team of coaches. Our coaching staff brings together a diverse range of expertise — from seasoned specialists across all disciplines to enthusiastic new coaches in development. Every coach at MAC is an accomplished athlete in their own right, with experience ranging from grassroots club level to international and Olympic competition.

All MAC coaches are UK Athletics (UKA) licensed and fully insured. As part of this, they undergo PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) checks to ensure the highest standards of safeguarding. Coaches also complete regular re-licensing, PVG renewals, and Safe Sport training in accordance with the requirements of UK Athletics and Scottish Athletics.

Our History

Motherwell Athletics Club, in its current form, was established over the winter of 1991–92 through the merger of two clubs with rich and proud legacies: Motherwell YMCA Harriers and Bellshill YMCA Harriers, both originally founded in the 1890s.

Since then, the club has continued to grow in strength, building on its deep roots in Lanarkshire’s athletics tradition. Over the decades, many outstanding athletes have been associated with the club. Among them, Jim Brown, a former World Junior Cross Country Champion; John Graham, who placed fourth in the Commonwealth Games marathons in both 1982 and 1986; and Yvonne Murray, a sponsor of the club in 1992, and one of Britain’s most decorated middle-distance runners, with European and World gold medals in the 3000m.

Perhaps most notably, Tom McKean, a double Olympian and world indoor 800m champion, has not only brought international acclaim to the club but has since returned as a coach, guiding and inspiring our junior athletes. His achievements include two European titles and two Commonwealth silver medals — all in the 800m.

With over 130 years of combined history behind us, MAC remains as passionate as ever about promoting athletics in the community. We're proud of our past — and fully committed to building a future where the benefits of sport continue to inspire generations to come.

Club Together Officer

Motherwell Athletics Club is proud to partner with Scottish Athletics to appoint our first Club Together Officer, a role focused on driving the club’s growth and development. We were thrilled to welcome Derek O’Neill to the role in 2025.

A Scottish Athletics-accredited coach and accomplished member of our Senior Endurance team, Derek brings valuable experience from both professional football and athletics. His passion for helping athletes of all ages reach their potential reflects MAC’s commitment to supporting our members and strengthening ties with the wider community.

If you’re interested in exploring development or partnership opportunities with Motherwell Athletics Club — either as an individual or on behalf of your organisation — we’d be delighted to hear from you. Please get in touch with Derek here.

Giving Back to Track

We’re delighted to share this short film that was made recently featuring our Juniors Group Coaching Team and athletes.
It captured the absolute joy that is coaching our athletes, why we do what we do and what a special club MAC is.
