Three MACs braved the rigours of the Lakeland Fells at the weekend in the inaugural Sticky Toffee Challenge in the idyllic setting of Cartmel in the Lake District, writes Alex Barr.
Clare and Alex Barr, as well as new member Alex Hay (pictured), travelled south for the event and were rewarded with some of the most enjoyable and varied running this side of Ulan Bator.
The series of races (16k to 6k) organised by Ultimate Trails all started in the historic village’s racecourse and followed routes which took in the best of the Lake District’s scenery. Warm, sunny weather kept up for the whole day.
The Barrs (1hr 50) tackled the same 16k route as Alex Hay, albeit starting an hour earlier than Alex, who was in the speed merchant’s class, finishing 10th overall in a superb time of 1hr 19.
They obviously have a laissez-faire attitude to measuring distances down there, as the 16k course, up hill and down dale, through mud pools, fording streams and skirting tarns, turned out to be over 18k long.
“You just got more for your money” was the response when this was pointed out to the organisers by a rather knackered Mr B!
All finishers received, not a medal, or a T-shirt, but a sticky toffee pudding (Cartmel being the home of this particular delicacy).
The evening was rounded off by a band playing late into the night in the racecourse grandstand.
We’d thoroughly recommend pencilling in one of the Ultimate Trails next year – superbly well organised, fabulous atmosphere and something completely different.Congratulations to Lewis Gibb, for whom it was third time lucky in the Hamilton Sports Council awards.
Lewis topped the Junior Male Sports Performer 2008 category.
He goes forward to represent Hamilton area in the combined sports council awards in August.
The three-way club competition involving Motherwell, Airdrie and Cumbernauld was voted a big success.
The event at Wishaw Sports Centre ran without a hitch, with Airdrie running out as overall winners and athletes from all three clubs taking home medals.
Yvonne Murray organised an SA level 5 starter which gave the event a more "professional".
The full Motherwell results are here.
John McCluskey has posted photographs from the day on flickr.
Volunteers are required to help at the three-way competition between Motherwell AC, Airdrie Harriers and Cumbernauld AC in the Lesser Sports Hall at Wishaw on Saturday.
Four people are needed for registration, four teams of three for field events, two for starting and organising athletes into heats and three runners to take results sheets to the hut.
If your child is competing, please help out for a couple of hours. You can of course watch her/him when they compete.
The event is for age groups u11,u13,u15,u17. The venue has been booked from 10am until 5pm.
Registration starts at 10am - cost £1. There is no need to pay at reception. Maximum number of individual events is three plus a relay.
A big well done to Jessie Miller, who was first woman in the St Andrews Hospice 6k last weekend in a time of 24mins 12secs.
Jessie also won the first veteran's prize.
Jill Strachan recorded a PB by 30 seconds with a time of 29mins 13secs.
If you see Michael Wedlock running round Motherwell with an iPod jammed to the side of his head, you'll know why.
Michael's name came out of the hat in the draw for the i360 headband competition.
Michael insists he entered so that Jane could benefit from the headband if he won it. So far, he has resisted efforts to have his picture taken while wearing the band.
Thanks go to i360 for donating the prize to the club.
You may have noticed an item on the message board about a document showing the fastest and slowest time trials during 2008.
Some pedants - one in particular - remarked that some of the formatting had been lost when it was uploaded to Google Documents, the place the website uses to share documents.
So here, just for those of you who lose sleep over colours, is the original Excel spreadsheet: Click here.
