Top track times for Lesley and John

Lesley Ross and John HughesLesley Ross and John Hughes were the winners of the Road Runners' 3K Track Handicap on Wednesday September 6.

Lesley clocked a time of 14.26 and John 10.26 to claim the honours. Click here for the full results.

Joe and Margaret had a tough time marshalling all the figures. Here's what Joe had to say: "Having looked at the times it looks as if two or possibly three runners did an extra lap.

"Definites were Jessie Miller and Jim Tracey whose times reflect a longer distance. However, the results still stand as the times recorded were the official finishing times and there would have been no impact on the rest of the results.

"There were a couple of lessons for next year - three or four people depending on the number of runners will be required on the lap/finishing line to make sure that each runner is counted by an allocated official.

"The start team will need to be separate from the counting team because unlike the 4 mile handicap the start and lap/finish lines are in different places."

A few words from Joe Hoolaghan re. the October trial: "We had something of a blanket finish at one point which means the handicaps are getting better but it has become increasingly difficult to get everyone's name and time as they cross the line.

"Four people were at the finishing line to identify the runners and get the times recorded. Thanks to Nick and Clare Hughes for doing a great job."

Joe Hoolaghan, the handicapper, admits to having had a rush of blood to the head and marked down Jim Tracey as the second FE-male finisher on the night when he scored the time trial.

The upshot was that the original results posted on the site saw Jim have a gender change.

This was noticed by a couple of eagle-eyed members and the fault was quickly rectified.

However, Joe was in possession of a picture of Jim, taken after the time trial. This led Joe to recall a virtual conversation prompted by the 10 Questions section of the website in which he and Jim discussed their favourite foods.

Writing on the site's message board, Jim admitted: "My wacky food favourite is Cheese Beanos, make some toast and beans, then melt some cheese over it all, a wee drop of pepper et voila!"

Joe remarks: "Jim could not be mistaken for a female athlete but he is an example of how you might end up if you eat too many Cheese Beanos and don't train very much." Every picture tells a story.

March Time Trial

John Hughes was fastest male, Anne Hughes fastest female. Click here for the full results (Excel document).

This championship consists of 10 races and runs from March until December. There will be one race each month and these races will normally be run on the first or second Tuesday of each month. The exception will be the December race, the Christmas Handicap, which will be run on a Sunday.

Athletes' handicap marks will be based on their best time over their last three time-trials. For those with fewer than their runs, their mark will be based on their best time-trial.

Note: In all races, points will only be awarded to those athletes who are current club members. Also, in the Club Championship races points will only be awarded to those athletes who are wearing club colours.
